Dawnstorm paced nervously, waiting for Eaglepaw to arrive. Actually, she was in a way hoping that he (he, right?) wouldn't. She was terrified. How could she mentor a cat she was afraid to talk to?

Eaglepaw sighed and padded hesitantly over to his new mentor, he wasn't shy or anything- just extremely cautious of making sure he didn't get too excited. He cleared his throat, "Umm... What are you going to teach me? I promise I'll try my best!"
ooc: Great... *rolls eyes* NOW I have to go. Sorry! G2G! CYA! CIAO!

"Oh, uh, yeah.. I mean of course you will... We're doing–" And suddenly her voice stopped working in a way. Her eyes showed her slight panic, and she tried to take a deep breath, hoping to get the terror of having to train an apprentice out of her throbbing head. "We're doing fishing. Have you ever caught a fish? I mean, of course you haven't, you've been a kit, right? Of course, I think. I mean, I don't know. Can you try? I don't mean can you, I mean will you... No, it's not a request I think... Try please? I don't know..." She trailed off, shaking her head in despair. This would never work.

Eaglepaw blinked and only smiled at the older she-cat, Well, do you want me to try first or are you going to show me first? He could only wonder, Is she okay?...

"I'll show you," Dawnstorm said, hoping she sounded a bit more sure than she was. It was easier to talk to a younger cat than one that was at your level or above. She walked to the water's edge, and watched as little fishes flowed past. A slower one drew near, stupidly close to the edge. A paw shot out, going at first down below the fish and the lifting up, flinging the creature into the air several mouselengths. It landed neatly down on dry land, and Dawn padded toward it, making sure it was dead. She looked up at her apprentice, her look seeming to say: Do you get it? with an added edge of I hope you get it because otherwise I'd have to try to explain.

The little apprentice's eyes lit up with excitement as he nodded that he understood. He pranced to the water's edge and stared daggers at the fish. He finally spotted one that came close to land and leaned forward to extend his paw into the water. Just when he was about to strike the fish darted away, and being green at catching fish, Eaglepaw leaned out further to chase it and fell in the ripples that the long-gone fish's tail left behind.
ooc: It's really bad, but oh well!

Astonished and somewhat terrified, Dawn raced to the water's edge, leaving the dead fish behind. "Eaglepaw?" she called into the wavy depths. She saw a shadow form, and hoped it was her apprentice. But not knowing, the shy feline followed her apprentice, leaping into the water. She tried to paddle quickly. She hadn't taught him how to swim yet... She knew that every cat was able to instinctively, but what if he wasn't strong enough?

Eaglepaw let out a frantic squeak as he felt his pelt weighing him down. He opened his eyes and cleared his mind, praying to StarClan that this would clear his distorted mind. Only a few mouse-lengths to the surface! he began to flail his paws in an ungainly fashion but made progress little by little.
ooc: Should Dawnstorm save him? It could be part of the whole thing where Dawnstorm warms up to him.... XP

OOC: That's a good idea!
Dawnstorm felt fur, she was touching the shadow. She just barely made out shape of her apprentice, and grabbed with her teeth - obviously not actually biting down - what she was pretty sure was the scruff of his neck. She pulled him upwards, struggling, paddling in strong strokes with her paws, and finally her front claws were able to grab hold of a root on land, and she pulled herself up, trying to drag the apprentice after her, hoping he would help and not struggle.
OOC: If you consider that powerplaying, I'll modify. I just was pretty sure you would be okay with her biting the scruff of his neck...

ooc: No, it's not powerplaying because we agreed and it was kind of unavoidable.
IC: Eagle paw could only stay limp for his muscles seemed to have given out on him. I was so close too, although I am thankful that Dawnstorm saved me! He sat down and coughed up the water that he had stupidly swallowed. He put his ears back, let his head hang low and could only look at his mentor's paws I'm sorry Dawnstorm. I'm too stupid and clumsy to become a warrior. I'm sorry you had to waste your energy on me.

Dawnstorm felt a strange new feeling of protective kindness come over her. She suddenly wasn't shy. "What do you mean? You were trying to catch a fish. I'm sure almost every apprentice falls in at first. I did, when I was your age. I actually blacked out, if I remember correctly. You should probably sit and rest for a moment... Then maybe I should teach you to swim."

Eaglepaw blinked in surprise at Dawnstorm's speech, Well, I guess it wouldn't hurt to give another whack at swimming.... he trailed off looking nervously at the river.

"Over here, there is a shallow bit where the river flows over higher ground. The current is slowed by the sand beneath, making it a perfect place to learn to swim." Dawnstripe padded to a place where the river was especially wide but not at all deep. She padded into the water, then motioned for Eaglepaw to follow. Her paws easily reached the bottom, his would to. The wetness reached her belly, but only just. On the smaller Eaglepaw, it would maybe come halfway up his flank. "First, just get used to the water. Then we'll swim upstream so that if the current gets the better of us, it'll just take us back here where we can regain footing, okay? And if you start going under, call out and I'll help you." She stood in the water, letting it flow past her paws, lapping up a tiny bit to quench a slight thirst.

Eaglepaw padded silently up to the river-side and gulped as he stared at the running water. I have to do this! If not, I'll be too scared to do anything, ever, he thought as he closed his eyes and simply hopped into the cool water while he still could. He smiled and finally knew that he could do this. So I kind of just... paddle upstream? he asked a little dubious that it would work, but nontheless began to move his legs at a steady tempo through the unexpectedly cold wetness.

Dawnstorm smiled for the first time in moons. "You're doing really well," she purred, paddling alongside and slightly in front of the apprentice so that he could watch her and copy what she was doing.
