WhiteEyes rolled playfully over his sister, batting a paw at her ear as Darkclaw walked up to the pair with their father by his side. "you two play-fighting again? i would've thought you'd be actually training"
"stop patronizing them darkclaw, they can't help how they are" father meowed.
"Da? how come darkclaw gets special training and we get treated like dirt?" whiteflower meowed in her quiet voice. it wasn't an understatment either, very few noticed whiteflower and even fewer noticed WhiteEyes. this had always been clear but they never understood why.
"well...it's because darkclaws oldest. you don't get treated like dirt though whiteflower, your the only she-cat so you'll inherit somthing from your mother, but WhiteEyes, being second tom, won't get anything, especially special treatment from the family's head cat" father meowed reluctantly
"fitting fate i'd say" darkclaw purred.
WhiteEyes twitched his whiskers and looked away, it wouldn't be so bad if darkclaw didn't always push it in their faces, but at least he had whiteflower.
"but WhiteEyes is every bit as talented as darkclaw! why should the order we were born affect anything?" whiteflower meowed, slightly confused, slightly angry.
WhiteEyes put his paw on her muzzle, silencing her next words. "it's ok sis, i don't mind, really" he meowed seeing her surprise.
"smart to keep her quiet" darkclaw chided, "she's gonna get herself killed one day, caring for the tail of our family and insulting the head"
WhiteEyes hissed and lept at darkclaw, he could tolerate cruelty to him, but not whiteflower. as soon as he entered the air however, father smashed a heavy white paw down on his head, knocking him to the ground. "never attack your brother!" he hissed to his son. "or else i'll kill you!" whiteflower dashed to her brothers side and helped him raise to his paws, as he did he looked at darkclaw, light eyes angry and hurt.
"someday your gonna die a painfull death, side by side yet unable to help the other" darkclaw laughed.
"that's what seperates us brother, you care only for yourself, not your family, even though it's going to be your responsibility someday. my question is if you can handle that responsiblity" WhiteEyes meowed in a shakey voice.
darkclaw sauntered up to WhiteEyes and whispered into his ear "i never take on more than i can handle"
WhiteEyes didn't understand what that meant, but turned and ran into the forest, whiteflower began to follow but father called her back. WhiteEyes stayed in the forest that night, unable to sleep because of haunting nightmares that he couldn't remember whenever thay roused him from the shallow sleep.
that morning, he returned home, only to be hit in the face by the scent of blood. a cold premonition clawed at his belly as he dashed into the den. he stopped dead and gasped at the sight before him, mother and father laying beside each other, killed as they slept undoubtedly. whiteflower, torn and bloody, mouth open in what was a final snarl of defiance. WhiteEyes felt an undying fury at the only one that could of caused it: "darkclaw!"
"yes?" came a cold hiss from the opening of the den. "i coudn't find you last night, so you now have to see what you caused, whiteflower would have lived if she wasn't so attached to you, but mother and father shared an inevitable fate. but they had to die in order to purify our family" darkclaw laughed in an evil way.
"so you killed them?!" WhiteEyes hissed. he couldn't contain himself, he sprang at darkclaw, claws extended and teeth bared. he dug his fangs into darkclaws scruff and clawed at his back, but to no avail, as darkclaw flung him simply away, a trick father had taught him. they raged against each other till midday, WhiteEyes being pushed to his limits, while darkclaw didn't break a sweat. "you can't beat me brother!" darkclaw finally hissed as WhiteEyes spat blood onto the ground. he's right WhiteEyes thought in dismay.he sprang away and ran through the forest, desperste to hang on to life, yet sick to his stomach that he was running away. someday i'll kill you brother! he promised.
