Animal Testing ~ Good or Bad?
Should animal testing be continued, or should it be ended now? There are many different viewpoints on this topic. Animal testing is used widely throughout the world; in the United States alone there are 17-23 million animals tested in laboratories each year. 95 percent of these are rats and mice raised in labs for research only. Each lab that experiments on animals has to register for a license, and there is a law called the Animal Welfare Act to help animals in labs. This act makes it obligatory for labs to make sure housing, feeding, cleaning, ventilating, and healthcare is done for lab animals. This act also covers anesthesia or painkilling for more painful experiments. Many scientists and researchers believe animal testing is needed, but animal rights activists object and say there are many reasons not to do animal testing. Animal testing is an activity that should be discontinued by humans.
One reason animal testing should be ceased is because it is insanely morally wrong. It’s not fair to kill animals as if humans are more important than them. Every being contributes to the world, and all life should be valued equally, animal or human or insect or tree. Humans are living life the way they want to; why shouldn't animals have a choice too? Humans are already dominating the world. What else do we need? But humans always need more, and are trying to use poor 'subordinate' animals just because they are helpless. Imagine that you are a lab animal, waiting to be tested for a cure for a disease that only affects humans. Right after the scientists test you, they kill you. What do you feel? There is nothing right about that. These poor creatures are neglected their rights to live the way they want to. They are bound in cages, alone and left to lose their minds. They cannot do the activities they would do in their normal lives. Humans have no right to do this to animals; these pigs and dogs and cats and chimps and mice did nothing wrong. Why should humans have power over them? Humans already have enough; what else do they need? Part of human behavior, though, is that we always want more. More toys, more researching, more testing, more animals getting hurt, more cruelty. It is time for this to change. These animals are being treated like garbage, and they don’t deserve it. Humans are the greediest creatures on earth. We always want more, more, more. More hand lotion, which leads to more research which leads to more animal testing which leads to more cruelty. what is right about that? Innocent animals are getting killed every day, and for what? So humans can have their hand lotion. Imagine this: you are a dog, and you're being dragged into a filthy, tiny cage. The humans leave you there with no care, no play. You sit; there's nothing to do except attempt to wash yourself, and stare at the animals being tortured right in front of you. As the humans pass your cage, you cower: are you next? But no, instead they take a chimp and execute surgery on it, then throw it back into its cage. You sit for several hours, waiting for your turn. What did I do wrong? You think. Did I commit a crime? But just as you think that, your cage door opens. You cower, but they drag you out and perform surgeries on you—no painkillers. When they're finally done with you, they throw you back into your cage. According to the Gallup Organization, 63% of U.S. residents polled think animal experimentation is morally acceptable. Only 33% say it's morally wrong. This status needs to be flipped immediately. Products one uses every day come from companies that do animal testing, like Pantene, Cover Girl, Sally Hansen, and Oral-B. And there are more. People don't even realize it. Another reason for animal testing to be stopped is that it is not completely reliable. Thalidomide is a medicine that was tested extensively on animals. But the effects on animals were different than on humans. It was tested on animals before being released with no problem, but phocomelia was found in babies whose mothers had taken Thalidomide. After that it underwent extensive animal tests. The scientists working on it did experiments on rats, but the limb abnormalities seen in human babies were not seen in the rats. Clinicians warned about this birth defect, and this caused researchers to re-check this in their labs. They tested the medication on many, many different species and breeds of animals, but phocomelia was barely seen. They tested on over 50 animal types, but the side effects that crippled children were rarely seen in these animals. Thalidomide is famous for this. There are many different medicines and cures that had different effects on humans; for example, 80 different vaccines of AIDS failed in humans, while successful with primates; same with 150 stroke treatments. Research on primates did not produce cures or treatments for any of human killer diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and malaria. Polio vaccine was actually "long delayed by misleading experimental models of the disease in monkeys" says Dr. Albert Sabin, its creator.
Professor Tipu Aziz says his treatment for Parkinson's disease came from experiments performed on monkeys, but really it was discovered in humans--and with most medical advances, the same thing happened. This proves that animal testing is not a reliable way to test diseases.
One good thing about animal testing is that it advances science. Fifty years ago a child w/ meningitis would have died. Now, because of penicillin, that child won't die. penicillin saved millions of lives, and to many this outweighs the fact that penicillin was tested on six mice. Almost all biomedical scientists say there are no alternatives to animal testing sometimes. A license will not be given for animal research if there is not another way to obtain data. maybe animal research does advance science, and find cures every once in a while. but with our technology, there will surely be a different alternative soon.
Even though animal testing may sometimes advance science, there are many more reasons why it is not necessary. Animal testing should definitely be discontinued immediately. Okay, it may be responsible for helping science progress, but why don’t people look for an alternative instead? Humans are being cruel to animals, and instead of wiping out all other species, why don’t we try to stop this? Animal testing is one of the worst things about the human species; we should work to cease this cruel, unreliable, and unnecessary activity.
